Broadband is now widely available, the hype has already started in the US: searching for videos and watching them over the internet. For this reason Webeffekt AG, Dinslaken is launching the video search service Komerca.tv (www.Komerca.tv ) in a beta-version and hopes to satisfy users with high quality results.
The success of internet videos is not surprising. Given the choice between the written word on a homepage and an online film who wouldn't want to watch the film? We don't just mean music clips and trailers but also videos about companies, products and scientific documentaries.
But how are videos made available through search engines?
The most common approach is the identification of video files stored firstly on internet servers by means of automatic indexing programs (robots, spiders etc.). In a second stage search words relating to these files and their URLs are stored. In principle there are two possible sources. On the one hand the text of the internet page via which the video can be downloaded, on the other hand the audio track of the film file. Both approaches enable the large-scale automatic inclusion of videos in the database of the respective search engine.
The new video search service Komerca.tv takes a different route ( www.Komerca.tv ). "In our opinion videos are currently still much more difficult for search engine robots to find automatically than web documents - i.e. mainly those that are HTML based. Therefore, the online videos listed at Komerca.tv need to be edited, by people" explains Robert Biermann, Managing Director of Webeffekt AG
( www.Webeffekt.de ).
Komerca.tv currently offers videos In German and English and in categories such as travel, science, consumer, entertainment and company.
Additional internet films can be proposed free of charge by completing a form. This will record the link to the video file as well as search terms which reflect the content of the video. The entry is then checked by the Komerca.tv editorial team and if necessary revised.
In this way the quality of the search results is significantly higher than our competitors. "Downloading an internet video should always be worth the effort as it is not possible simply to click on as with an HTML document. Komerca.tv is aiming for class not mass", explains Biermann clarifying the concept.
